unable to insert text into prefrences dialog

To reproduce with galculator in scientific calculator mode input int the menu select edit prefrences. and click add to add a constant click on the field name enter meaning of life no text appears. Enter 42 into the value. And enter into the description a hitchhikers guide to to galzxay refrence. None of this entered text will be entered into the ui. galculator:

I expected to be able to enter constants into galculator and save them with the prefrences dialog. Instead the backspace key worked but no data was entered.

For some strange reason I cannot reproduce this in a 64 bit version of ubuntu-mate.
