Bug Description

In Ubuntu Jaunty final, gajim doesn't have any icon in systray, while pidgin opens a "special" icon (which lists all messaging programs).

PS: in advanced configuration "trayicon" is enabled…

In fact, it is because python-gnome2-extras was "suggested" but not mandatory…
I installed with : sudo apt-get install gajim --no-install-recommends

I think python-gnome2-extras must be installed even with --no-install-recommends, no?

I ran into this problem on a fresh install of Jaunty. I'm going to reopen this because it looks like a regression of Bug #240215
Gajim is capable of providing it's own tray icon or it can use the one provided by python-gnome2-extras. Gajim is currently compiled with --disable-trayicon. If Gajim is going to be compiled with --disable-trayicon then python-gnome2-extras needs to be a dependency instead of suggested.

Actually this is a result of Bug #348793 which moved python-gnome2-extras to suggests. Perhaps Gajim should be build without --disable-trayicon so as to still provide a tray icon without relying on a ton of gnome dependencies?

As a workaround you can just install python-eggtrayicon package.

Actually in Gajim README file (http://hg.gajim.org/gajim/raw-file/1001e93ec906/README.html) in "Optional Runtime Requirements" one can read: "GnomePythonExtras 2.10 or above (aka gnome-python-desktop) so you can avoid compiling trayicon and gtkspell". So it seems that gajim package in Ubuntu (Jaunty and Karmic) suggests python-gnome2-extras just for two packages that python-gnome2-extras depends on: python-gtkspell and python-eggtrayicon.
