Bug Description

Often (not always), when I send a message to another user I can't see into the "chat field" the text I've sent and I've to click on the "chat field" to make it appear. Seems like a chat refresh bug. It seems to appear more often when animated .gif smileys are used in the conversation.

A animated smiley theme can be downloaded from here:
http://artwine.wz.cz/secondary/gaim-QIPsmileys.tar.gz

maybe I see the same problem: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gaim/+bug/93868
but it seems to be dependent on smiley theme.. for the default one or ICQ-5.1-like it is ok, but for QIP-like one (animated) there is that problem..

this happens when animated gifs are present in the chat window, but not always

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution.

Can you install the latest Pidgin version 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 in Linux Ubuntu Gutsy and confirm if you can reproduce this bug?

Yes, but I need to wait for someone that sends me animated gifs!

I've had this problem recently too (last week). I'm not sure at 100% that I was using the last Pidgin build. Has there been a new package recently ?

Take the time to test it, please be sure that the version you have installed is the 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 version. You can do this by typing this on a terminal :

apt-cache policy pidgin

In my case, it works and it seems to works for people with the duplicate bug #93868

Well, in my case it happened about 10 days ago. So unless there has been an update since, I have it with 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4.
But I'll check this more precisely when I can.

Well, it happened one time during my tests (for reasons unknown: I think there was no animated GIF involved at that time) with the 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 version.
It hasn't happened since I switched to version 2.3.0 (from Getdeb), although it may still be there as:
1. I don't use Piding often and it might just not have happened to me with the latest version yet;
2. It seems to happen quite randomly.

Hum, I set the status of this bug to Incomplete because we can't reproduce it with actual Pidgin version but if someone can get more information about this bug, it would be a great contribution.

The only problem of this bug is that we must find someone that is able to attach animated gifs to the conversation. I don't know how to do this, do you?

This bug looks like a duplicate of bug #93868 which is fixed but I believe that we must confirm that it's really fixed before marking this bug as a duplicate.

How to install and use an animated smiley theme :

1. Download a animated smiley theme like QIP ( http://launchpadlibrarian.net/6861494/gaim-QIPsmileys.tar.gz )
2. Open Pidgin and click on Tools / Preferences
3. Go to the "Smiley Themes" tab and click on "Add" button
4. Select the previously downloaded theme ( must be a .tar.gz archive )
5. Make sure the new theme is selected in the list and click on close
6. You are now using animated smileys

You can also ask one of your friend which use Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger / else to send you a animated smiley during a chat session.

Mmm... just happened to me with v. 2.3.0 :-/
It was not after receiving a sentence with an aniGIF in it, although there had been some in previous sentences (and thus, aniGIFs were present in the chat window).

Because this problem is still present even in 2.3.0 (from GetDeb) and http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/938 is marked as fixed
I have filled new upstream ticket related to newer versions of Pidgin: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4419

Probably upstream bug reference should point to this instead of 938
