Gaim pops up many popups for the same error

Bug Description

I had problems connecting to an account this morning.

Gaim displayed a button with red text. I clicked that button; it disappeared and a dialog appeared with an error message. I left that open; gaim tried to reconnect some time later. The button re-appeared. I clicked the button: there are two warning dialogs open.

This doesn't feel like a bug to me. You clicked to get details on two different connection failures. One could argue that if the error is the same, it shouldn't open two windows, but if the error is different, it's more tricky... If one error was "Connection refused" and the other "Bad password", should they be grouped together? I guess you could say the second one should replace the first. In any case, most people just close the dialog after looking at the reason (or clicking Connect), so I don't think it's something that really needs addressing.

I'm not the Ubuntu developer on this package, so if you feel this rejection is wrong, please change this to "Confirmed".

Honestly, I don't want to think about what kind of error this is. I either expect one of these two behaviors:

1. As long as the dialog is open (which might be required for debugging or getting support), gaim doesn't try to automatically connect (as there is a connect button that doesn't even get insensitive if the second connection attempt succeeds).

2. If a second error occurs (on the same account), add it (together with a timestamp) to the dialog; well, at least if the error is different.

Reason: I don't want to think in terms of connections (in which case you're absolutely right); I just think about accounts - the core question of IM is whether or not an account is online, not how many connections failed.

This is with gaim 1.x, right? The behavior should be better for you in any of the 2.0.0 betas.
