I agree that probably not too many people know about that option during the
logout. But personally I find it a lot better to control which applications
start by default in my gnone sessions via that one single mechanism than having
individual applications decide based on their own internal preferences to start
or not in a new gnome session.

My opinion is that the current session-saving mechanism is sufficient. It's not
exactly hidden; the checkbox is displayed on every logout. Is there some way in
which you feel that it could be made more obvious than it already is?

should it be made on by default for new users (to save the session-settings)?
Personally I find it more intuitive if gnome tries to to return to my previous
login state as much as possible unless I explicitly ask it not to do it. But
maybe that's not the wide-spread opinion out there.

I don't think than saving the session by default is a good idea. A lot of user
close the session with stuff open and probably don't expect to get all the reopened.
