Bug Description

Binary package hint: gadmin-proftpd

Testing Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit I got this error message when trying to launch it from the menu:

Could not launch menu item
Failed to execute child process "su-to-root" (No such file or directory)

The program is installed but everytime I try to launch it from terminal I get this:

root@blackdiamond-desktop:~# gproftpd
The program 'gproftpd' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt-get install gproftpd
-bash: gproftpd: command not found
root@blackdiamond-desktop:~#

Bye and thanks for your work

Fabio

Dear Fabio,
It seems like the new version of gproftpd in Intrepid was renamed to gadmin-proftpd.
You will have to call something more like:
root@blackdiamond-desktop:~# gadmin-proftpd

The menu item may also be set to run the old "gproftpd", and should be fixed to run the new gadmin-proftpd command.

Sorry KRS,
I am not exactly sure what is happening with your Intrepid, if you have any more information, that would be great, otherwise I will check back in a week or two to see if someone has picked up on your issue, or if you have resolved it yourself.
If you are still having problems, maybe we could send a support ticket on the official gadmin site.

The

"Could not launch menu item
Failed to execute child process "su-to-root" (No such file or directory)"

problem is because you do not have the su-to-root application installed. apparently the su-to-root allows you to run an application as super user, similarly to sudo. If you add the -X option it is equivalent to gksudo.

Just install the package "menu" using synaptic and this problem will be solved.

I really do not know we this package is not already installed, or why gksudo is not used in the first place.

I upgraded to Intrepid 32-bit from Hardy (32-bit), may be a clean install would not have the problem.

Now that the su-to-root problem is behind us, the problem remains that the GUI crashes.

It appears that the gadmin-proftpd version that is currently in the repositories has a bug (see also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gadmin-proftpd/+bug/276181).

Just install the newer version from here

http://debian.cs.binghamton.edu/debian/pool/main/g/gadmin-proftpd/

and the problem will be solved.

I do not know if it matters, but I completely removed the gproftpd package (which apparently is outdated now), just to be on the safe side.

The package you have to download is:

gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_i386.deb --> for 32-bit systems

or

gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_amd64.deb --> for 64-bit systems

Let me know if this worked for you.

Hi all,

I'm a newbie in Ubuntu. I'm got the same problem right now. Does anyone can teach me how to install the Gadmin-Proftpd 0.3.5 step by step(I've download the Gadmin-Proftpd 0.3.5 already)?

Many thanks!

Actually, this is off-topic, but here are some pointers.

It's extremely easy.

If you have downloaded a .deb file, all you have to do is double click it and follow the on-screen instructions (you will need your admin password during the process).

Check the following link for more specific instructions.

Have you changed the port FTP listens to?

If yes, set the port back to the default value (21) and see if the problem persists.

Also, I know it's pretty stupid, but... try to restart the router.

I had a lot of problems executing specific commands (such as LIST) and took a day or two, just to find out that it was a router problem.

i changed back to port 21 and restarted the router... and restarted the server too

Still having a 530 problem...

i have been using the GUI to add users...

it seems to still use my users from linux...
i just realised that the passwd i use is the same as when i logon... not the passwd i set in the server...

How do i change so i can use virtual users? i found a nice checkbox in the GUI that is checked...

i really dont want any user acces to the server... only to the ftp...

The bug seems to be corrected in Jaunty. The "menu" package is now a dependency for gadmin-proftpd and the repositories now offer a new problem-free version.

@GetriX --> Try asking the question to a related forum, since it is not related to the bug and thus is off-topic.

PM me if you think that I can be of some further assistance.
