I have tried to open a mounted samba share in .gvfs/
(the usual way won't work, see bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/282298 )

mounted samba share:

running with Samba 2.2.8a

(no problems with hardy)

Same problem on a fresh installed&updated Intrepid RC.

mounting that stuff with smbfs and the shell works seamless.
But then its not in userspace. And nautilus will load all the unnecessary preview stuff. (slow down the whole network)
