Bug Description

Binary package hint: sysvinit

Given that on a stock ubuntu system, network is managed using NetworkManager and nm-applet and given that it doesn't kick in up to when a user logs in a graphic environment, going single-user (for recovery at grub's prompt during system startup OR for maintenance at any moment) offers the sysadmin with a 'netroot' menu choice that is useless should the system connect to the net through a wireless access point that is encrypted (dhcp is not enough).

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: initscripts 2.86.ds1-61ubuntu11
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: sysvinit
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic i686

Also, shouldn't Xorg start for any reason, a user will be prevented from browsing the net seeking for fixes/advices.

Also, should the system run any kind of client OR server networked service, this will be unaivailable up to when someone would not log in (in a way, similarly to this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1)

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

security vulnerability: yes → no

UPDATE: sorry for abusing of 'security', I meant 'important' (from my point of view).

Also, in Jaunty NetworkManager auto-connects to a known (already configured) wifi access point, yet it disconnects when going into single user mode so the 'netroot' issue is still open.

Also, thanks for acting so fast to the 'security' tick.
