Bug Description
Apparently DejaVu fonts have a bad reputation, see http://
Unfortunately fontconfig depends on ttf-dejagnu; it makes no sense at all!
Recommending this font is one thing, but I'm pretty sure fontconfig doesn't _depend_ on _any_ font at all, much less a buggy font like this one. This dependency means I can't uninstall this font otherwise I'd have to remove gtk2 too, and that means removing the whole desktop.
Please repackage to remove the dependency; please consider also not installing it in the default ubuntu desktop.

Sure DejaVu has its bugs, but it surely is better than Bitstream Vera fonts, with added support for many Languages and better diacritics. Additions like Arabic and Armenian are not usable on a daily basis for the moment. I've already opened a bug report suggesting to use DejaVu LGC (only Latin/Greek/ Cyrillic) instead of DejaVu (all inclusive). It has also been suggested to split the experimental fonts (Condensed and Sans ExtraLight) in a different package.
If DejaVu LGC was the standard font for Ubuntu instead of the current DejaVu, all the critic Behdad has would be severly weakened, if not in oblivion. We've fixed the bugs on our side when not on Pango's back, and we've provided releases without the problematic scripts. Packagers really need to wake up.
Apart from that, I agree, it doesn't make sens to have ttf-dejavu as a requirement for fontconfig.
