Bug Description

I've upgraded to hardy, and the fonts in my webbrowser (both firefox and epiphany, leading me to believe it's a fontconfig bug) became VERY ugly.

My default font is "sans-serif", but lots of web pages render in a serif font, that has been smoothed into unreadability (I have a 150dpi 1920x1200 screen). The web sites that do render a sans-serif font tend to have wide and thin letter parts as well.

Confirmed here. Upgraded my notebook (using goubuntu instead of ubuntu-dektop, FWIW) with "apt-get dist-upgrade". What other information can I give?

I have this problem too, and I'm using Hardy Alpha 2. It happens both in the preinstalled and official version of Firefox. I haven't tried Epiphany, but since it's based on Gecko (just like Firefox), this could very well be a Gecko bug.

If I change the default fonts in Firefox to the DejaVu fonts this problem goes away. It seems that Firefox uses the Nimbus fonts by default because if I select them I get the ugly look again.

Yes, it works for me too (with Firefox 3.03b in Hardy).

Had the same problem on my laptop - changing the settings to all DejaVu fonts fixed it.
