Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When entering some web pages (most notabily the Yahoo web based classic mail manager) a blank window appears (to be more precise, a plain Frame with no components in java-swing terminology), then the tab where the page is open slows down and after some time - it could be just some seconds or a minute o two, firefox crashes.

It seems to be something realted with the IcedTea gcj plugin, but I can't confirm it yet. Ill try disabling it for a while.

Here is the stderr produced during a faulty session.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04

Oh. excuse me. I forgot to write about the test i did.

Actually, I disabled the GCJ Web Browser plugin a week ago (IcedTea-plugin) and since then Firefox didn't crash anymore. So, I assume it's an icedTea issue. I find it a bit estrange, since conflictive pages had no applets.

I've experienced the exact same problem. However, I don't and haven't ever had the IcedTea plugin installed. If it helps, I have a few extensions installed: Flashblock, the StumbleUpon toolbar, and user agent switcher. The behavior happens about 1 in 6 times I run Firefox, and will always lead to a crash within a few minutes if the blank window is closed. The windows usually seem to pop up early in a runtime, often within the first few pages that are loaded. It doesn't seem to crash, though, if the blank window(s) are not closed. I've never caught firefox's stderr output when the behavior occurs, though. This has occurred in both the beta 5 that first shipped in Hardy, and in the new presumably-rc1 version that was pushed in an update.

I too have this same bug with ff3.0 final under PCLinuxOS fully up to date. I don't have the GCJ plugin either.
I do have a few extensions installed, but all are from the official add-on site.
I started clean with ff3 by deleting my old dot directory of mozilla.

Disabling the GCJ plugin seemed to resolve the problem for a while, but then - some days ago - I noticed that still the blank window appeared.
So I disabled the Flashblock extension and I it has not happened again - yet. I am not sure this plugin is the buggy one, so please try uninstalling it. Perhaps this helps.

Flashblock I do have. I'll try uninstalling it too and get back after a few days (earlier if it happens again).

On a whim, I tried deleting my .mozilla folder in my home folder. After doing that, I haven't experienced the problem, even with flashblock reinstalled.

OK, after uninstalling flashblock I had two pain-free days with no blank windows.

Today I got tired of all the flash and re-installed a couple of hours ago -- Bingo! now I have a blank window again.

So flashblock it is.

Also, I noted in my first post that I use pclos (an rpm-based, non-debian-derived distro), so it has nothing to do with ubuntu repos.

Too bad, I'll have to find a replacement for that, but nice to have the problem trouble-shot anyhow.

Thanks guys.

Dang. I was wrong. I really hate intermittent promblems. So hard to trouble-shoot.

Today is the 10th at 19h16 and I just got a blank window. That's over three days with no probs since that last post.

Flash block is back in and the game begins anew I suppose :-(

Perhaps flashblock exacerbates it or something, but it is clearly not the proximate cause.

Did you try to install the flashblock package available in ubuntu
instead of installing it from addons.mozilla.org?

I had tried installing it from both mozilla addons and ubuntu repositories. The result was the same.

Can you check the version in mt PPA as well ?

It is about to be backported in hardy ;-)

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hi all.

Excuse me for taking me so much time to answer. The fact is that I will continue using Ubuntu 8.04 for a while and I will not be able to test it in a newer version in my computer in the near future - just hardware issues.

Sure you already know this, but just in case, this is an extract from mozilla.addons.org page for the flashblock plugin:

"All RECENT crashes on Ubuntu have been traced to one of two problems (this may apply to gentoo and other debian based distros).

1. You are using the Firefox version from the Ubuntu repositories.

Install the official tarball from mozilla.com Most people on Unbuntu report that the official release from mozilla doesn't crash in the same circumstances that Ubuntu Firefox crashes. Also the official tarball is reported to be much more stable.

2. You are using Flashplayer 10 beta on Ubuntu.

Users have reported that Flashplayer 9.0 r124 don't crash for those specific pages. Unfortunately Flashplayer 9.0 r124 crashes with RealPlayer streams and 10 Beta doesn't crash in this case. So I guess it's one crash or the other."
