A test version of the proposed merge is available from the following PPA:

The package in the PPA has been tested under arm64 on a Pi 3, and Pi 3+; further testing should be done on additional archs and platforms prior to merge.

Merge looked fine, the changes also seemed to be minimal regarding out use-cases. Sponsored.
