Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I just installed edgy and I am running firefox 2.0.0.1. I'm taking online classes from UMUC using a system called Web Tycho. I can view pages fine but when I attempt to submit data in a java script, it causes Firefox to shut down. I duplicate this problem 100% of the time. Web Tycho says they do not support Firefox but this application works fine in Firefox on a Windows XP (sorry, I had to say it)machine.

Here is the technical info from Web Tycho:

Graduate School Requirements

1. Browsers

    * Netscape Communicator 7.0 (for PC)
    * Internet Explorer 6.0 (for PC)
      Please note that we are in the process of verifying the compatibility of Internet Explorer 7.0 with WebTycho. While we do not officially support IE7 at this time, we will do our best to help should you contact us for assistance. If we are unable to resolve problems we will recommend using version 6.0 until testing is complete.
    * AOL 8.0 (for PC)
    * Netscape 7.1 (for Macintosh)

2. Computer

    * Windows 2000
    * Windows XP

3. JavaScript 1.5

4. Java Virtual Machine (JVM)

5. An E-mail Account

6. Configure Various Settings
Once you have established access to a computer, various settings must be applied. Follow the Setting Up Checklist for guidance.

7. Unacceptable
Any other browser or operating system is not acceptable. This includes Macintosh computers and AOL, Opera, Firefox and older versions of Netscape and IE and beta versions. You may find limited success using alternative technology with WebTycho, but success is not assured.

I would love to, however when I get to step 2 of the backtrace I cannot
get the format correct for the following line: gdb <program> 2>&1 | tee
gdb-<program>.txt

I am also having problems using the procedures for when the process is
already running. I am trying to get the PID:

rmaurice@ubuntu:~$ pidof firefox
rmaurice@ubuntu:~$ pidof firefox
rmaurice@ubuntu:~$ pidof firefox %u
rmaurice@ubuntu:~$ pidof

I would assume the <program> would be firefox or firefox %u
or /usr/bin/firefox

?????

Please follow the instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs instead since the way the page cristian gave you doesnt work with firefox.

Cristian please read: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs/Triage

Mozilla products dont use gdb the same as otehr packages do.

John and Christian,

I submitted the /var/crash to the bug report website. I also ran firefox
as described and obtained the gdb-firefox.log after replicating the
crash. It didn't say much, just "Program exited with code 0377".

Thanks for your help.

Rich

This looks like the same gtk_style_realize crash as in bug 81978, which was duped as part of bug 45008, but in this case, the crash was not as a result of being called after nsFilePicker::Show.

Hmm. I'm not a developer or code writer so I can't speak to the similarities between this and the other bugs from a code perspective. There are a few differences from a user perspective:
1. I can duplicate this problem 100% of the time. It crashes every time.
2. I am not downloading or saving a file to a hard drive. I am working in java-sdript based text box similar to this one, where I submit comments and homework assignments. The text box is a bit more complex as it has spell checking and several features built in. The crash happens only at the time I hit the "submit" button. In every case. my comments submit successfully, I just have to restart the browser. I've attached a screenshot. the website is at: https://tychousa2.umuc.edu/sys/login.html?http://tychousa2.umuc.edu/WebTycho.nsf&0

It's a secure site unfortunately.

Hi. A fellow UMUC student here. That screenshot is not of a 'javascript-based text box', it is a Java applet. You can tell because when it loads, it has that big Java clock loading: <http://weblogs.java.net/blog/campbell/archive/images/graybox.png>
