Bug Description

Firefox places downloaded files to irrelevant directories to the downloaded file type, for ex.
saves .mp3 to 'Downloads' directory not to 'Music'
saves .doc to 'Downloads' directory not to 'Documents'
though it saves video files to 'Video' directory not to 'Downloads'

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.3) Gecko/20010801
BuildID: 2001080104

I usually put MP3 in a different directory than PDF files, which is not either
the one i use for pictures, etc.
It would be really great if mozilla was smart enough to pick the target
directory of a saved file based on its mime type (plus some user preference)
rather than storing every file in the last used directory ...

An intermediate feature would be to support a list of user's favourite store
location.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download a tarball and put it into "install"
2. Download a mp3 and save it into "music"
3. Download a tarball again

Actual Results: aargh! you have to go back manually into "install" from music :(

Expected Results: mozilla "see" (or i told it before) i like storing tarballs
into "install" and open the save dialog with that directory rather than
the last directory used.

Nice idea. Modern Windows versions have folders such as My Documents, My
Pictures, My Music and My Videos (they can be placed on older systems by other
software but the locations aren't always consistent e.g. Windows Media Player
prefers C:\My Documents\My Music whereas RealJukebox prefers C:\My Music).
These could serve as useful defaults on that platform. It should be possible to
customise these locations (and the MIME types), at the very least with a hidden
pref or possibly heuristics.

Marking NEW.

Steps to reproduce:

Downloading 3 files with the following extensions:
.mp3
.doc
.wmv

Actual results:

Firefox places downloaded files to irrelevant directories to the downloaded file type:

saves .mp3 to 'Downloads' directory not to 'Music'
saves .doc to 'Downloads' directory not to 'Documents'
though it saves video files to 'Video' directory not to 'Downloads'

Expected results:

Downloading all file types to 'Downloads' Directory.
To avoid cluttering the folder, I suggest to create a tree of folders under 'Downloads' folder, like:
'Downloads/Video'
'Downloads/Audio'
'Downloads/Documents'
etc..

The 'browser.download.dir' key was pointing to my Videos dir, I didn't modify it by hand, it might be caused by some add-on.
At this point, I'd like to suggest creating a tree of dirs under 'Downloads'(ie. Downloads/Video, Downloads/Music and Downloads/Documents) then download manager saves each downloaded file to it's relevant location, just to avoid cluttering the 'Downloads' dir, and it can load slowly, if that dir contained a lot of items.

Anyway, thank you Tim.
