I have the same issue, it is firefox, after several minutes of waiting, i can see in the gnome-system-monitor that some tasks are Uninterrumpible, like Xorg, firefox-bin, plugin-container, evolution, etc.... An i can also notice that the hard drive is intensive accesed. I changed the urlclassifier.updatecachemax to some about 50 MB, and it got some better, but the firefox stills very choppy and unstable, i cannot have more than 10 tabs open and my system is a P4 2.8 GHz (HT) with 500GB 7200RPM HDD and 512MB of RAM...

I have this issue but only after upgrading to Ub11.04 and Ffox 4.02. Unable to recover at all - keyboard LED (num lock) goes out and mouse pointer disappears - sorry I upgraded now, cant even get to updates or get back into system without a complete power down.
