One of the problems with Google's encrypted searches is that not all of its services are included. For example, image search does not have an HTTPS equivalent. So if a user's default search is encrypted, the user won't be able to find image search on the side bar and they won't know why.

It is no longer true that image search is unavailable via HTTPS. As far as I can tell, Google is fully functional via SSL.

Defaulting to using Google via SSL is the right thing to do. I suggest this bug be closed as obsolete.
