Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Shortly after upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, Ubuntuzilla notified me that I should upgrade Firefox from 3.6.0 to 3.6.3 following the instructions at the Ubuntuzilla Website. Since I also had problems with Thunderbird after the Ubuntu upgrade, I also arranged to upgrade Thunderbird to 3.0.4 (which apparently succeeded).

Note that the system saved a crash report, but when I followed through, the report was trashed since Firefox is not an official Ubuntu package. Given the way that Linux developers OUGHT to be working together, I am surprised that the crash report was trashed -- instead of being carefully saved so that it could be turned over to the Mozilla developers. Indeed, it could even possible that after 'finger pointing' exercises have finished, it could even turn out to be a joint problem.

I am also a bit upset about the strictness of Cannonical policies about application upgrades between operating system upgrades, as it interferes with the ability of the user to keep his/her system up to date, driving users to extremes such as employed by the Ubuntuzilla team.

Hello and thank you for reporting this bug to ubuntu. I am confused however by the bug description. Are you having an issue with the Ubuntuzilla Firefox or the Ubuntu packaged one? If there was an apport crash report for it, could you link us to the report? I am setting the bug to Incomplete as we assemble more information on this bug.

Also just fyi Ubuntu developers cannot support non ubuntu packages but we can refer the bug upstream to Ubuntuzilla and see if they can help.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. The Ubuntuzilla PPA is not officially supported and does not use Launchpad to track bugs, so I am closing this report. Please file a report on the Ubuntuzilla bug tracker (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=202789&atid=982990). Alternatively, the Ubuntu Mozilla Team, which is responsible for maintaining the official releases of Mozilla products in Ubuntu, has a Firefox Stable PPA which allows the use of Launchpad to track bugs (https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-stable/) if that's what you're interested in.

The Ubuntuzilla build process failed, in Ubuntu 10.04 leaving me with
the Firefox 3.6 that resulted from my Ubuntu upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04.

Note that you may wish to take issue with the trashing of a crash report
due to it originating in a non-ubuntu product!
