Bug Description

In Firefox 2.0b1 on Edgy, the default spelling for a machine that has been set up as a UK Locale machine is en_US.

This should be en_GB or English/United Kingdom.

There are some fairly noticeable spelling differences.

Seconded. The same goes for epiphany.

This happens to me too - the key to set is spellchecker.dictionary - This bug also affects Epiphany.

This is on Edgy.

You can also right-click and select a different language. But it's definitely the case that it does not use the environment language= settings. It really should.

Ralf, I had already long worked around it. It is just the case that IMHO this behaviour is incorrect.

Danny, You *are* right! the behavior is wrong! So the bug report was
valid. (although you were not the only one, so i marked it as a
duplicate of a previous bug)

My remarks about right-clicking was just to show you a workaround so
you can get on. I wasn't trying to invalidate your bug. It is a bug.
They default dictionary should be based upon the language choses
during login-time.

Ralf

This option isn't available if you're using Epiphany (and I'm guessing, Galeon?), however, so it'd be nice if the right language were chosen automatically (and perhaps this should be forwarded to gnome bugzilla as a bug in Epiphany too)

Yes I agree, the default language should be based upon the language choses at login-time. And the available dictionaries should be choses based upon the installed languages in Admin -> Language Settings.

This is how it should work. I do hope they can fix this before Edgy.

This is rich. I'm in the US, have a system set up everywhere else for US English, and yet right now Firefox is complaining about how I've spelt 'color'

I can't help but wonder if a fix has been committed that hard-wired all systems to British English.

Anyway, I realize this is only an annoyance, but nevertheless it shouldn't be happening.

Well current Hardy (alpha 4) also has a en-US spell checker when run in a en-GB system.

On Firefox in Hardy the English (GB) Language Pack 2.0.0.7 is installed.

This appears not to affect the default dictionary.

I don't know if this was ever fixed, but in Lucid Lynx beta 1, the default spelling dictionary is still en_US, even though the en_GB dictionary is installed.

This one is fixed in Natty. We set the default spellcheck pref to a localized value in ubufox
