Bug Description

1) Open the following link in firefox 3.5.8:
   * http://www.ludibria.com/nfo.php?sys=wii&sysid=4831
2) Choose link "download NFO"
3) On the Open Dialog, make sure "Open With gedit" is selected and click OK to open

4) Watch the following error appear:
<<file>> could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

This error should not happen... On step 3 I had selected "open with gedit", yet gedit fails to launch and the file never opens.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

- This is bug and not a papercut
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.

Hmm , if i download the file and then open it it works fine. Only the "open with" option in firefox seems to have a problem.

Assigning to firefox

affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) → firefox (Ubuntu)

And if i set the "Always open this file" in chrome , it works fine. The file is open in gedit with no errors

ssbastos and anyone else affected,

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu and Firefox since that time.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported in a currently supported version of Ubuntu?

Please let us know if you do otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.

My own tests show that Firefox 63 handles .nfo files correctly in Ubuntu 18.04.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.
