Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox crashes on many website with embedded objects

everysite using some kind of flash or other embedded objects in html, hard crashes firefox. even without the flash player and other firefox plugins installed.

this is the error reported if i start firefox from console:
The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 118 error_code 8 request_code 146 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

however putting --sync after firefox binary does (visible) nothing for me.

Because this major firefox problem, it crashes on a very high number of sites, making it practicly unusable.

found this bug after reinstalling my machine to dapper
firefox version is the one in dapper, 1.5.0.3

not really much to say, a 100% clean test user without any extentions or plugins yield exactly the same result as my normal user... a crashing firefox with the error reported above.

Please give some example urls. Do you have java installed?

any url that, as far as i found, contains <object> tags. eg:

http://miniclips.com/, http://www.polarfitnesstrainer.com/, etc
but i thought also java applets <applet> tags had problems.
(i tend to stay away from java applets, but some internet accounting and payment software uses it)

i've been playing with this over the last few weeks, and deinstalled + installed, plugins like:

totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin, flashplugin-nonfree and java packages

now it works without crashing, i do not have any good guess/reason why it now appears to be working, except for just reinstalling the debs for flash multiple times. (before the recent firefox update)

guess it could also be some failure on the part of a plugin or plugin installer, but then the firefox message terrible... and strange to have it solve 'itself'...

hope this helps... if other people had similar problems, please let this ticket know :) otherwise maybe close the ticket if it's not reproducable..

I'd like to add that the same happens to me, often (but not always) when there is a flash movie embedded in the page. However, instead of just crashing firefox, the whole system freezes and I have to pull the plug.
