There seems to be a moderate number of reports with the same behaviour so unless someone thinks the opposite I'm going to merge those common reports.
The bug reports with same sythoms are: bug #45008, bug #64734, bug #65183, bug #68168, bug #70018, bug #70185, bug #70797, bug #71033, bug #72392, bug #72488, bug #72650, bug #73403, bug #74720, bug #75129, bug #75835, bug #75846,
We still need more information on this bug, so please any new comment/attach should go into bug #45008 as it might be the master bug of this problem. Please try to follow the hints in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox it will be of great help for us in tracking down this problem.

This is the master bug for crashes and freezes on theme change in gnome:
NOTE: most stacktraces might not be due to theme switches. search for nsFilePicker::Show master bug to get the bug that tracks those issues.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE this issue:
1) Start our app (Firefox, Seamonkey, Thunderbird, whatever; make sure it's a
GTK2 build)
2) Open some windows (a dozen should be good)
3) Open gnome-control-center
4) Select the "themes" item
5) Switch the current theme
