Bug Description

If a user disables menu icons, most applications reflect the change immediately. However, Firefox needs to be restarted before the change takes place. This can give the impression that Firefox is not honoring the setting.

This has been confirmed with Firefox 3.7 on Ubuntu 10.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu release, this would help us a lot. If you can test it, and this bug is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could let us know what version of Firefox you are currently using.

Also, if this bug is still a problem for you, could you please describe the issue more clearly? It would be great if you could provide us with specific steps to reproduce the problem, along with a clear description of the behavior you are experiencing.

I have lucid and I cannot find this setting in Appearance tabs

Draycen DeCator (ddecator) wrote :

Thank you for the response. In Lucid, the Interface tab has been removed from the Appearance settings. If you wish to enable/disable icons in menus, you must run 'gksu gconf-editor' then navigate to 'desktop' > 'gnome' > 'interface'. Then you will find a check box for icons in the menus.

While testing this on a Live USB of Lucid Alpha 3, my icons were disabled in menus by default and I could not enable them, so hopefully you will have better luck.

However, on Karmic I was able to disable/enable icons in the Firefox menus without any trouble.

If you are able to test this on Karmic and/or Lucid, please let us know what you find.

We'd like to figure out what's causing this bug for you, but we haven't heard back from you in a while. Could you please provide the requested information? Thanks!

you don't need gksu for gconf-editor ;-)

problem still persists
icons are disappeared from all programs (liferea, empathy, evolution), but in Firefox there are always icons, independant of settings in gconf-editor

Draycen DeCator (ddecator) wrote :

Sorry about that, I just found that out a few days ago =)

I'm sorry to hear that the problem is still persisting for you. Could you please run the following command in a terminal?

apport-collect 424711

That will collect debugging information from your system so we can get a better idea of what is causing this bug. Thanks in advance!

now, I have lucid (upgraded from karmic)

I am sorry, I had forgotten

in upgraded system to lucid problem still persists (only in firefox for me)

in lucid beta 2 tested in KVM, there is not that problem

but, there is another problem, see screenshots

Sorry for the delayed response. Could you please make sure your system is fully up-to-date and let us know if you are still seeing icons in the system menus and Firefox? I'm guessing that Firefox is still having an issue with this, but I'm hoping the system menus have been fixed.

I am going to do clean install at weekend, than I will make a report

in Default clean installation icons in system and places are missing, Firefox is ok, 'coz in other program icons are not displayed

Draycen DeCator (ddecator) wrote :

So the problem has been resolved for you?

maybe firefox does not ingore settings of showing icons, but there are missing some icons in main menu (Places and System)

Draycen DeCator (ddecator) wrote :

Other than the missing icons in the main menus, does Firefox seem to be following the settings that you have set for showing icons?

a bit, firefox follows settings, but after restart itself, not in realtime like other GTK+ apps

but after its reastart

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.3a5pre) Gecko/20100506 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Minefield/3.7a5pre
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.3a5pre) Gecko/20100506 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Minefield/3.7a5pre

Gtk offers Ubuntu users the ability to designate whether or not icons should appear in the menus. As of Lucid, this option is harder to find, but it is still available. Firefox was fixed to honor these settings after bug 415810 was filed.

However, Firefox must be restarted after this setting is changed. Other applications, including Nautilus, Rhythmbox, Liferea, and the Terminal all reflect the change immediately. This can confuse users into thinking that Firefox is not honoring the settings if it is the only application that does not respect the setting right away.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox in Ubuntu
2. Open gconf-editor and disable icons in menus
3. Check the menus in Firefox
Actual Results:
The icons are still present until Firefox restarts.

Expected Results:
The icons should be removed instantly like other applications.

This is theme-independent and easily reproducible.

Reporter is actually confirming a Launchpad bug so I am marking this as New and blocking the original menus_have_icons bug
