It gets better and better. I tried various combinations, and here's what I
found:

1. xprint usually lets one change paper size and still works, but if you try
to print to file, you're likely to get something like this:
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (fasttop): 0x411f9838 ***
and firefox obviously crashes on that.

2. the CUPS queues either don't work (because of the paper size braindamage,
sometimes even when paper size is left at the default), or they print to
file just fine. They didn't crash firefox, unlike xprint.

And the CUPS queues sometimes ignore the print command, and sometimes
respect it. Often the command is reset to the default (!) after it works
*once*.

This is higly worrysome, there are obviously dangling pointers or worse in
this mess, I cannot reproduce *anything* reliably, it is like hunting
ghosts. I am bumping this bug to grave, this crap cannot reach testing.
Feel free to downgrade if, for some reason or another it works for most
users.

Subject: firefox: Printing support (CUPS) completely hosed

Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg-2
Severity: important

Firefox is one step ahead on the road of getting printing completely wrong.
Now, it pops up a dialog which supposedly should get the printer's profile
from CUPS, but screws that up. Royally. And I cannot even fix this dumbass
software by telling it to call xpp instead of lpr (xpp does things right).

The result of the "new printer support" is that NONE of the printer's
capabilities are available since firefox screws that up, BUT now firefox
refuses to print at all just because my printer has a4 paper and I cannot
get even the fucking postscript/generic driver (which should support ALL
paper sizes, damn it!) to work. !@#%#% PoS software thinks that even
postscript/generic must support only letter-sized paper!

And the Debian paperconfig default in this machine is a4 just to add insult
to the injury.

I am not sure if you guys are aware, but letter size is NOT a good way to
try to print on a4 paper (it causes information loss), which is used in most
of the world. If firefox is going to pretend it knows about printing, it
must get at least THAT much right.

Please remove all "intelligent printing" crap from firefox until it is ready
for use. Let us use xpp or kprint or something else that actually works for
now.

I can't reproduce the problems you experience. I've successfully printed to a CUPS printer, but unfortunately haven't tried any other printer.

Printing to file with CUPS-driver or Postscript/Default works fine, however, both with Letter and A4.

Maybe you could describe a bit more clearly the steps needed to reproduce any of the errors that happen every time? (preferably without having to actually print every time)

Hello,

I can confirm this bug. My papersize is A4 by default on my system.
My CUPS works in A4 mode for most applications. When i try to print

also tried to change the papersize in the property of the printer.

Anyway, i can print with Xprint. But this bug is very annoying.

Thanks for maintaining firefox,

Hi

I'm also suffering with CUPS printing from "Deer Park"
(1.4.99+1.5rc3.dfsg-2) not working, with a "paper size not supported"
error. It looks to me as if the dimensions for a4 are wrong. In the
File - Print - Printer - Properties - Paper Size menu it lists "iso-a4
(209x296 mm)". Although the "A" paper sizes are not really exact
numbers of milimetres (the ratio of their sides is sqrt(2)) the
dimensions for a4 are normally rounded differently, to 210x297. I'm
guessing that some other bit of the system is rejecting the 209x296 as
not close enough. Where does the list of sizes in that menu come from?

XPrint (I think that's what it is; the PrinterName@:64 entries in the
Printer menu) has the same list of paper sizes, but they do work in this
case. Unfortunately I get the wrong fonts when I use this, even when I
print-to-file and view with ghostview.

This is a pretty serious regression; I can't print web pages. Let me
know if there is any further information I can provide.

p.s. Sorry for not checking the newest version; I wanted to browse the
changelog, but packages.debian.org is down.

Just a quick followup to my previous report; this is still broken in
1.5.dfsg-3. Does anyone know where the dimensions in the print
properties dialog come from? I bet the "209x296" vs "210x297"
difference is the key.

I found that removing prefs.js from the default profile causes firefox
to probe for printer information. Now the printer works and the print
dialog has many more options then before :-)

Printing in firefox (Debian/1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-2) is 'hosed' with
lprng too, so this is not CUPS-specific.

It is interesting to see how exactly it is hosed. The following
results explain some of the conflicting reports:

Test A.
=======

1. Remove prefs.js from the firefox default directory.
2. Start firefox.
3. print page to file using PostScript/Default (i.e. CUPS, if you
   have that). Succeeds.
4. print same page to file using xprint (lp@:64). Fails. 'Paper
size is not supported by printer'.
5. Stop firefox.

Test B.
=======

1. Remove prefs.js from the firefox default directory.
2. Start firefox.
3. print page to file using xprint (lp@:64). Succeeds.
4. print same page to file using PostScript/Default. Fails. 'Paper
size is not supported by printer'.
5. Stop firefox.

So it is whatever you used first, from a 'virgin' situation, that
works (and will keep working afterwards).

I noticed that in the new firefox the 'Postscript/Default' has
been changed; it now uses Freetype printing by default, and thus
can print international pages. So we are closer to being able to
get rid of xprint (/etc/init.d/xprint stop or update-rc.d -f
xprint remove); then X must be restarted, otherwise there will be
long delays while firefox keeps looking for the missing xprint.
Now only PostScript/Default will be offered.

Unfortunately, the print results with PostScript/Default, although
better than they used to be, are still not quite up to the
standard of (properly tuned) xprint. For instance I noticed some
problems with printing left and right (UTF-8) single quotes, and
with Korean. But this may also be a matter of tuning.

This is just a suggestion for the other people who have been suffering
from this bug. Having had no printing for several weeks, I decided to
try an official mozilla.org download. I installed a nightly build (it
happens to be 2006-02-12, but that's not anything special), and it
works. Font selection might not be perfect but I haven't investigated
that properly. It seems to have only the "CUPS/printername" entries in
the printer list.

As I mentioned in an earlier message, I'm convinced that the problem is
that somewhere there is a list of paper sizes that has the "A" paper
dimensions rounded incorrectly. If someone who has the package source
tree available could do a "grep -r 209 ." that might give us a clue.

Hello,

sorry to report that maybe the paper dimensions aren't the essential
point. On my machine, it shows nicely 210x297mm, however I get the paper
size error described above. Only the PostScript/default into a file
works (and there I have to change the papersize from Letter to A4 at
every single print).

Best wishes, Viktor.
