This is by far my largest gripe with firefox. The user expects that when they load new tabs in the background, it should not interfere with the operation of the whole application. On the two machines I use predominantly (one is Firefox 1.0.7 on Fedora FC4 / dual 500MHz PIII / 512MB RAM, the other is Firefox 1.5 on a FC4 / 3 GHz P4 / 2GB RAM, both approx 256kb/s connection), I get this happening all the time.
