Best I can tell that message is from Firefox.

Sometimes applications' log messages get incorrectly labelled as coming from the shell.

affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) → firefox (Ubuntu)

Do those messages appear to be associated to unwanted behaviour/side effects (crashes, browser not functioning)?

I wasn't able to match the messages to an associated behavior.

I still have this (or a very similar issue) after having upgraded to 20.04

I've occasionally observed similar messages when testing firefox in virtual machines. This usually results in the firefox process taking longer than expected to return after quitting the application, but no other negative side effects.

This is a problem because the errors also spew to the terminal -- corrupting whatever the user is doing now in the terminal.

Firefox is started with a terminal if the user runs (possibly indirectly through a script) something which uses xdg-open, for example, on a file when firefox is the handler for it.
