I found this at <http://tips.webdesign10.com/firefox-browser/firefox-profile-manager-gutsy>:

There is a workaround that I found on Launchpad -- just use the following command instead:

firefox -a asdf

That will launch the profile manager in Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon. Hopefully they will fix the bug in the next release.

Is there more information regarding this workaround? For me, that didn't open the profile manager, either, but it did open a new window using my alternate profile manager. I'd like to understand what's going on.

I normally use profiles (3 concurrantly) ... interestingly enough, if they already exist in your home directory, you can choose from them. Some misbehaviors: On my kubuntu computer, I leave /home alone and then reformat everything else for the upgrade/fresh install from Fiesty to Gutsy. I notice no problems and my 3 profiles work as they did before.

I do a fresh install of xubuntu onto another computer and copy .mozilla from the kubuntu computer and I only get the profile designated as default in ~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini by Default=1 option. Nothing will allow me to open profile manager nor am I able to evoke the other profiles as I am on the other computer. I'll try messing with the values in profile.ini to see if I can get to my other profiles.

you can also run

MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 firefox -P

to get a new firefox instance with the profile manager.

Instead of setting MOZ_NO_REMOTE you can specify it on the command line:

 firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote

Maybe -ProfileManager should imply -no-remote then. It doesn't _work_ otherwise.

May I ask exactly _why_ this does not constitute a bug in Firefox?
