Bug Description

Since earlier today I have found that after about 10 minutes or less of using Firefox that suddenly for no apparent reason pages will refuse to load any contents, and although Firefox does not take me to the page which says it can't reach the site, it doesn't manage to load anything as though its internet connection has suddenly been lost. It won't even let me check for updates for plugins and gives an error for that. I have tested with other applications such as ping and the internet connection is fine, it's just Firefox which loses it.

I have noticed that when I run firefox from Terminal that this is the output to begin with:

1482487989643 <email address hidden> WARN Loading extension '<email address hidden>': Reading manifest: Error processing background.persistent: Event pages are not currently supported. This will run as a persistent background page.
1482487989666 <email address hidden> WARN Loading extension '<email address hidden>': Reading manifest: Error processing author: An unexpected property was found in the WebExtension manifest.
1482487989666 <email address hidden> WARN Loading extension '<email address hidden>': Reading manifest: Error processing version_name: An unexpected property was found in the WebExtension manifest.
1482487989666 <email address hidden> WARN Loading extension '<email address hidden>': Reading manifest: Error processing options_page: An unexpected property was found in the WebExtension manifest.
1482487989708 <email address hidden> WARN Please specify whether you want browser_style or not in your browser_action options.
    Promise resolved after context unloaded

Then when the problem starts to occur, I find that the only way to resolve it, if even for a short period, is to restart the browser, so I tell Firefox to quit, however although the window does close, the process carries on and this is the output:

tabs.onRemoved event fired after context unloaded.
tabs.onRemoved event fired after context unloaded.
tabs.onRemoved event fired after context unloaded.
    console.error:

I am then told that Firefox crashed and asked if I would like to submit a report, so far I have told it to submit a report three times as the crash has occurred that number of times.

For that entire period of time this is the output from Firefox in syslog:

I am running Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 and Firefox 50. Although I am sad to say this, if I don't find a solution for this issue soon I am at least temporarily going to have to switch browsers because Firefox is seriously becoming unusable with this issue.

This is not uncommon when there's a shutdown hang due to another process/ script blocking it.

I'd recommend disabling the Gnotifier add-on first and then the Ghostery add-on after that. I haven't looked at the crash reports, but I'd be surprised if this problem reproduces in safe mode.

Is this normal or another bug?

I will also wait a while now and see if the issue comes back with Ghostery supposedly now removed.

Right, so all of that craziness seems to have been the fault of Ghostery. But I would just like to know, was the fact that it stayed enabled even though I disabled it in the settings and it was showing as such there, a bug in Firefox, or Ghostery? I mean, which should I report it in? And was the error I got after removing it anything I should report as well?

Oh dear, I am now awfully confused. I will have to do some more testing on this matter later on, maybe I will test it in Safe Mode for a longer time this time. I'm pretty sure now that the issue does not appear in Safe Mode, however disabling and even removing GNotify and Ghostery doesn't seem to do the trick. Although it does remove all those Ghostery warnings.

However in my debugging work I have come across another big problem, I cannot disable most of my add-ons, literally the ones which say they need a restart of the browser, whatever I do, no matter if the browser closes with or without crashing, or even if I click that Restart Now button (which actually does nothing but close the window for me), it doesn't work. When I come back in it has the same notice about restarting to disable them, and they are still enabled. Is this connected with the original bug or should I file a new report because this is all very strange and preventing my debugging work?

I'm not sure. I'm hoping Rob or Dave knows what this might be symptomatic of - off the cuff, to me it sounds like one or more of the systems we use to keep track of add-ons is corrupt. I don't know which or how that would happen (could be a lot of things, from the add-ons themselves to some issue in Firefox to disk issues on your machine, for all we know at this stage). Rob or Dave should know more.

(clearing ni for Mike because this seems unrelated to session restore and more related to the add-on manager)

Right, now I have the problem that I have told certain extensions which I need for security to re-enable, however they just tell me to restart Firefox, but even after restarting the machine they still say the same thing and do not enable. What is weird though is that these problems happen a lot now, but are inconsistent, sometimes it will even work almost perfectly, but most of the time not. And the symptoms will somewhat change. But here is the log that you requested:

The logs don't really say anything one way or another, it doesn't look like an attempt was made to disable an add-on. Generally this is a symptom of not saving the json database to disk, if the file hasn't changed in a while that would be another indicator. The fact that the browser doesn't restart when pressing restart suggests that something is keeping it alive which could cause a failure to save the database. I'd guess at another extension or an anti-virus tool on the system, but that's a wild stab in the dark really.
