Bug Description

Since Ubuntu 16.10, Firefox misplaces autocomplete popups. In the attached screenshot, the autocomplete popup is displayed below the "Nombre transferencia" field, although the focused field is "Mensaje para destinatario", below. Also, moving the mouse pointer below the correct field actually highlights completion options as if the menu was there (see the mouse pointer position on the screenshot)

I'm seeing something similar with menus and dialogs in Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 especially when using LibreOffice. I have two monitors of different sizes and I see this on the second larger monitor.

May be your problem is not with Firefox but with GTK/Gnome/GDM etc?

Are you seeing this with any other applications?

I haven't seen the problem in other applications, but I mostly use Firefox. Other apps I regularly use are GEdit, Nautilus, GIMP and Eclipse. LibreOffice I use sometimes, but not that much.
I did see the issue with menus in Firefox though, but it has not happened to me in a while, so I assumed it was fixed. When it happened, a workaround was to move the window a little bit.
Like you, I have two monitors, but both are the same size. I am not sure it happened on both monitors, I'll keep an eye on it and report back here.

Hi, I just noticed the bug happens on both monitors. I am attaching a new screenshot, this one is on the primary (external) monitor; the previous one was on the secondary (laptop) monitor.

Adding screenshot of a LibreOffice menu which consistently appears well below where it should. This is on a large monitor acting as the primary display. Anything that appears on the laptop's monitor displays correctly.

I think this bug report needs reassigning away from Firefox but I'm not sure to what at present.

Also affects emacs25.

Using Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 on a Toshiba C-50B.

Hi gpothier, other applications affected are synaptic and liferea.

I've just reconfigured my monitors so that the top edges align rather than the bottom edges. My menus now display in the correct position. Does this work for you?

I'm adding gdm to the bug report as I don't think leaving it against Firefox will attract the attention of those that can help. If gdm isn't the correct package then hopefully someone will correct me.

Ok, that's probably two separate bugs. I have a 100% reproducible scenario in Firefox, even with a single monitor, on an up to date, freshly booted 17.04:
1. Go to https://yoast.com/research/autocompletetype.php
2. Don't input anything and press Submit your name. An extended form appears, with fields for name, email, and more
3. Start typing your name in the name field. The autocomplete menu pops up and shows several alternatives (assuming you have some autocomplete values registered). Do not select anything, but instead keep typing random letters until there is no autocomplete match and the autocomplete menu disappears.
4. Go to the email field, and type the first letter of your email (assuming your email is registered as an autocomplete value)

Result: the autocomplete menu appears, but it is anchored to the name field, not the email field. Moreover, it is out of sync with the mouse position (it behaves as it it was at the correct position, therefore the highlighted item does not match the mouse position).

If in step 3 you choose an autocomplete entry instead of typing random stuff and having the menu disappear, the problem does not occur.

I just enabled the -proposed repository and installed Firefox 52, in which this bug is fixed. This bug can thus be closed.
