keyword search in url bar fails after upgrade to firefox 41

Bug Description
After upgrade to firefox 41, keyword searches are no longer working for me in the url bar. All keyword searches are instead being passed to the default search engine (google).
This looks similar to bug #1417240, but I don't remember being affected by that bug and this has certainly been working for me up through firefox 40.
