Bug Description

System info:
Firefox 28
Thunderbird 24.4.0
Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit

When I edit text in Firefox or Thunderbird, parts of this text (usually entire rows above the cursor) seem to disappear while I type.

This happens e.g. when I edit an email message inThunderbird, or edit a Jira comment or a Wikipedia page in Firefox.

Sometimes the 'opposite' happens, i.e. a row is copied, so it is shown twice.

The text is not really gone; I can restore it by selecting it (e.g. with Ctrl-a). I.e. only the text display is affected.

The behavior is not quite reproducible. It does happen frequently, but I can't reproduce it exactly by typing the same text again.

I had never observed this behavior before the latest Firefox upgrade.

I just noticed that sometimes the text is not simply blanked out, but replaced with graphics from elsewhere in the FF window.

I can confirm that this behavior happens on Firefox 24, Ubuntu 13.10 32-bit as well.

It's not a major problem or anything (I can restore it by selecting it with Ctrl+A or simply clicking/moving the cursor over the textbox), but it's a little annoying since it happens very frequently.

I'm noticing this effect already since quite some time. Cannot remember when it started. Currently using Thunderbird 31.2.0 on Ubuntu 14.04.1 x86_64.

I observed this bug in the previous LTS release (12.04?) and I confirm it is still here in Ubuntu 14.04.1 (Thunderbird 31.2.0).

System details:
x86_64
nvidia graphics, nouveau driver
KDE enviroment
Happened in both Thunderbird and Firefox in Ubuntu 12.04. Under 14.04.1, I observed this bug in Thunderbird but not (yet?) in Firefox.

Don't know how to reproduce it reliably, but it happens sufficiently often to be annoying.
When it happens, I usually force a window refresh by switching to another (fullscreen) window and back.

I filed a Mozilla bug report about this here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1204694

I also created a video showing how I can reproduce this bug every time in Thunderbird: https://youtu.be/ybkVPSfiNJs

The bug seems to be related to the spell-check-as-you-type feature, but may be related to the graphics driver as well, as the bug occurs on my laptop (Radeon open-source drivers) but not my desktop (NVIDIA proprietary drivers). More info can be found in the bug report I linked above.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. This bug was reported some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu, Firefox and Thunderbird since that time.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that was reported using currently supported versions of Firefox, Thunderbird and Ubuntu?

Please let us know if you do otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.
