Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Proposed Testcase:

I find that this page:

    http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/

usually causes firefox/flashplugin to chew up 100% CPU an become almost totally unresponsive.

----

firefox causes 100% cpu load on some sites, and then scrolling is really unusable, really slow.
i have a new feisty installation and updated all packages.
i have a P4 with HT and 3,06GHz, and a ATI radeon 9000 with open source driver.
what to do, or can you fix this on the version 2.0.0.4, because my version is 2.0.0.3+1-0ubuntu2.
i think its a render problem, but dont really know.
regards chief

Thank you chiefcooker for this report.

Can you provide a test case? e.g. an URL where this behavior can be reproducible always.

It is important that you try to reproduce it with a *fresh* profile (hints at [1]) because it might be caused by a buggy third party add-on.

Thanks in advance.

I forgot.
I have open source ATI driver (ATI IGP340M)
Gutsy updated.

It's a long time I'm having this problem (sure since edgy, probably before (Dapper))

Due to CTI solved this problem with flasblock, I think it's a flash plugin problem. (As I had noticed)

Try to open this page

www.udineseblog.it

and open in other tabs some articles from that site.

After a while those particular pages tend to become unresponsive and cause 100% load cpu like a wave.
Firefox goes to 100% and return to 10,20% alternatively like a wave. My laptop fan start spinning until i close that pages...
That site pages have some flash and youtube video content.

Tried to install FlashBlock, but it doesn't fix the problem completely.

I confirm this issue, happens with me quite frequently.
For example, if you're on a blog and that blog has many youtube videos, Firefox will just die.... 80 to 100% CPU load (Even if *None* of those videos is played or has been played)

Firefox goes 100% cpu load after enabling some flash content (I use flashblock)

Does this happen with gnash instead of flashplugin-nonfree as well?

With gnash cpu I have several gtk-gnash processes (I guess one for
each flash content in webpage) but one of them stays at about 33-34 %
with gtk-gnash process (others at about 2% each one)

firefox-bin process is ok, few percentage points.

The problem is I can't use gnash because I can't see contents. (white
background on window)

I confirm that gnash works the same for me as for Sergio on the matrixsynth page (white box without contents).

However when I start http://www.wp.pl and open some 5-10 links from "Wiadomości" or "Sport" sections in tabs, my system becomes very unresponsive (after some 30 seconds I can switch to term window and kill firefox). This behaviour is identical regardless whether I use gnash or nonfree plugin. It does not happen when I uninstall flash completely.

Some of the problems listed in the comments are related more with javascript.
Both flash and javascript are known to work less efficiently in linux compared with windows or macintosh.

However, developers are working to correct the issue.

ok i think i have a fix for the people who are using flash player 10 beta. to test if it will work for you go to a site that causes the bug for you then click Tools > Add-ons scroll down to shockwave flash and click disable, if the site starts working faster then the problem is that you are useing an older version of flash 10 beta.
I believe this is the same as bug #38131 in the older flash 10 beta using the newer prerelease it seemes to work fine but you have to download it to from the flash site http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html the one in the intrepid repo is bad.
if your using hardy then downgrading back to flash 9 may be easier
