No one is "stonewalling" - Shawn's filed bug bug 470332 on remembering the choice of helper apps, bug 285976 exists to cover not offering to remember when we won't save the choice, and I've just filed bug 470514 to cover making it possible to remember "Save as" as a choice, per comment 5. I think those bugs together address most concerns adequately.
