Downloading files with firefox on an ntfs partition (ntfs 3g) results in empty files

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I have trouble when downloading with firefox to my NTFS data-partition on Feisty (with latest updates). Remark: I use version 1.0 of NTFS 3g as provided by the official repositories.

Now everytime I download a file (say http://www.gnome-look.org/content/sh...content=30812), it is empty (0 byte) on the hard disk and does not even appear in the firefox download list.

If I do however copy files from my ext3 home-partition to the NTFS partition everything is fine.

An inquiry on the NTFS 3g forums revealed that it is not an NTFS 3g-bug. I can confirm this, because it does not appear with Epiphany.

I have also tested a standard mozilla build of firefox and the problem does not occur either. I suspect a bug in the Ubuntu firefox build.

edit: Some people have confirmed this in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=406161

Best,
ember

Well - strange. I thought I had searched thoroughly. However I now found

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/65164

which is about fat32, but may relate to the same problem.

It seems to be permission related for both ntfs-3g and fat32. If you mount NTFS without the use of any of uid, gid, umask, fmask and dmask options, i.e. no permission checking is done at all, then probably download will work. Otherwise you must configure these options in a way that the relevant firefox user permissions match the preconfigured NTFS one, even if you use the 'silent' option.

On fat32 the quiet option may help.

I currently mount the ntfs- partitions with no special permission masks (only charset is set to de.UTF8). But I'll try to play around with them this evening.

O.k. It seems to work now, I have mounted the partitions now with:

/dev/sdb1 /media/Daten ntfs-3g user,noexec,nosuid,nodev,dmask=000,fmask=111,locale=de_DE.UTF-8 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/System ntfs-3g user,noexec,nosuid,nodev,dmask=000,fmask=111,locale=de_DE.UTF-8 0 0

This is o.k. for the moment, but still this is strange, because it does not appear with the Mozilla builds of firefox.
