Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

I was attempting to download the realplayer by pressing yellow download button and firefox crashed

I searched google for the linux realplayer download and then scrolled down the page until I saw the yellow download button.

I pressed the button, waited about 10 seconds an saw that firefox crashed. When I reopened it, I told it to restore the previous session.

This time I brought up the bug report window.

I have instructed firefox to remove the download window after the last file has been retrieved. I also have it ask me for the name of the directory in which to put the file.

Thank you for the crash report. Can you repeat the crash? Does the crash generate a crash report? If so would you please attach it to this bug report, so we can process this bug further.

Hi Reed,

Thanks for attempting to help.

I just repeated the same steps that went through when the crash first
occurred but sadly it did not crash.

Here's the website that I was looking at in case that helps, but like I
said it didn't crash for me:

 http://www.real.com/linux/?src=

I pressed the yellow download button and it crashed (when I reported the
problem) but isn't crashing now.

I'll understand if you can't do much.

I'll tinker around with it a bit and if I can get it to crash, i'll mail
you the crash log if any.

By the way, how do you get a crash log? Do I need to set my user
attributes to allow crash dumps? I've forgotten the magic trick to do
that.

Regards,
  Lowell

Lowell,

While firefox is sometimes known to crash randomly, please understand these crashes are often not bugs. They can frequently be attributed to extensions, plugins, or other factors.

For this reason, I am closing this bug. Please feel free to reopen it if you feel the crash is reproducible. Use one or more of the following criteria: on other releases of Ubuntu, Newer versions of this program, crashes on every load and with up-to-date plugins.

By the way, Reed, firefox crashes a lot for me -- even though when I
installed it I made almost no configuration changes -- none that I can
think of.

Whenever I run some program that installs a plugin -- like MPlayer, I am
extremely careful not to touch anything that I don't have to.

Did I ask you how to get it to produce a crash log? I never see any
files in my home directory that would suggest that they were crash
logs...

Thanks,
  Lowell

At this time I will be reopening the bug and unassigning it from myself, as I am unsure how to get what you are looking for. If anyone else is able to do this, please take this bug.

Thank you for the bug report.

Could you please try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs, or upload the crash report that probably was generated during the crash and that should be located at /var/crash/. Also, please if this crash is reproducible describe the steps that lead to it. This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance

Hi Reed,

I understand -- thanks for your help so far. You can't fix what you
can't duplicate.

Is there a way to make firefox produce a core dump that I can attach to
a bug report the next time I get one?

Thanks,
  Lowell

Hi Hilario -- thanks for pointing to the backtrace instructions, I'll
see if I can follow them.

Also, I am pretty sure that a report was sent when I created the bug --
it sure took an awful long time to search my system then asked me if I
wanted to send it. I answered yes.

I'll check the backtrace instructions and see if I get anywhere with
this.

Thanks again for your help.

Firefox is a lot farther a long that netscape ever was...

Hi Hilario,

I've been trying unsuccessfully to mail you a .gz of the crash log you
need for this issue.

However, my ISP limits me to 10MB and the .gz file is 17.2MB.

Is there an ftp size I can put the data?

Thanks,
  Lowell
