not able to download files using firefox

Bug Description
Binary package hint: firefox-3.5
i am using Firefox version 3.5.8
mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical - 1.0 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US;
when i try to download a file a screen pops up shouing wat to do i select save file then nothing happens. downloading from mozilla is not possible.

Problems i am facing are:
.i am not able to download a file from a link if i do so the a screen pops up showing wat to do, if i choose to save the file on desktop then the window close and nothing happen further.
.when i click on an image to save it nothing happens.
.when i try to save a web page from file menu then also nothing happens
what may be the reason???
