When Gmail set as default mail client in Firefox, gmail home page opens, not the compose page

I have Gmail selected as the default email client in Firefox. When I click on a mailto: link, the Gmail main page opens. What should happen is that the compose window should open with the address that I have clicked already entered into the "to" field.
