I experience the same problem both on latest Ubuntu and Debian Squeeze. I'm working on the latter now. The Firefox is downloaded from Firefox' homepage, my pc architecture is x86, GPU: nvidia with latest drivers from nvidia's homepage (190) and uname is as follows: Linux debian 2.6.30-2-486 i686 GNU/Linux.

I've noticed, that the problem is caused by adverts. When I install adblock + flashblock, pages, that caused the havoc in my system, stop being nasty. I can reproduce it easly on http://www.linuxquestions.org/ without and with adblock on.

So it looks like it's a weak cpu issue. I can't tell if there was a problem on my last Ubuntu 9.04, because I was browsing with adblock all the time.

Update:

Well, it seems, that the problem is not caused only by flash-like advers. On this url: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Playing_stereo_on_surround_sound_setup_%28Howto%29 the are several table-like objects, that also freeze my pc, when I use central mouse button scrolling, i.e. it's scrolling untill end of the page, without me being able to stop it, or to do anything else. This kind of issues definitelly didn't take place in Ubu 9.04.
