I experience the same problem both on latest Ubuntu and Debian Squeeze. I'm working on the latter now. The Firefox is downloaded from Firefox' homepage, my pc architecture is x86, GPU: nvidia with latest drivers from nvidia's homepage (190) and uname is as follows: Linux debian 2.6.30-2-486 i686 GNU/Linux.
I've noticed, that the problem is caused by adverts. When I install adblock + flashblock, pages, that caused the havoc in my system, stop being nasty. I can reproduce it easly on http:// www.linuxquesti ons.org/ without and with adblock on.
So it looks like it's a weak cpu issue. I can't tell if there was a problem on my last Ubuntu 9.04, because I was browsing with adblock all the time.
