Bug Description

In Karmic, Google Custom Search for Ubuntu become the default in Firefox.

The search results are unfriendly, ugly and in English, which is bad for people who doesn't talk English. Why did you replace the good and easy Google Search engine by this painful one ?

Moreover, when a new tab is opened, Ubuntu Start Page is loaded, even if the start page has been replaced. Unbuntu Start Page has the same problems than the search results, like in Jaunty. We don't need it, Google's Homepage or Firefox Start Page (http://www.google.com/firefox) are fine, nice and easy to use.

I desactivated "Multisearch" plugin to get rid of these problems.

Not only is it ugly and in english only, but other google features are missing (eg. searching for "1 pound in kg" doesn't return what you'd expect). Huge regressions for what? What was wrong with the old google search?

If the idea was to make more money out of searches, you've lost me ubuntu. I've removed the new google search and used google.com as my homepage now. You get no money now, just an angry user.

Yes, idem ! You are all right, I forgot about it : "but other google features are missing"
Google videos, images, gmail, ... are missing too.

This thing is a shame !

Given the loss of functionality (internationalization, ease of switching between types of searches, unexpected search results) and how it affects the appearance of search results (It looks kind of ugly, no? Not very ayatana-friendly), I hope that the folks in charge at Ubuntu reverse this change by removing this extension from the default install.

If this is something that is being put in place for the alpha and beta releases, but will be removed for the final release, I could understand it, as it will bring in a bit of income to support bandwidth costs during the pre-release milestones. If it will be included in the final release, then I think it's a poor decision based on the technical reasons above.

If the decisions about this could be made clear to the community, I think it would help to prevent a ruckus from being raised as more people test out the pre-release versions. Thanks!

But seriously, props to the big cojones of whoever added the ad's above the search results.
