Since reinstalling with 10.10 I am also experiencing this bug. It seems to be periodic, in that if left alone, the cursor will change with a particular cycle, even if this is somewhat variable.

This exists even if using the stable xorg updates PPA. It is quite a major usability issue, and is probably going to force me onto Chrome.
