Version I'm using is Firefox ver. 3.0.14 which is the most only one offered via Ubuntu's Synaptic.
While checking on the Firefox site I see that there is a version for Linux ver 3.5 and while exploring how to untar Iand install I discovered the solution on this page which has fixed my problem.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Some+text+shows+up+bold+after+upgrade?style_mode=inproduct&s=upgrade

It lay in coming back to the shown font sizes. I've no idea how they got changed or set that way.

I notice that the fonts were set this way on both my computers leading me to believe that it happened by install or upgrade from Ubuntu.
For me the problem is solved.
Thanks for your patience
