Bug Description

When I modify my personal status in facebook, the system freeze completely (the CAPS LOCK led begin to blink). The only thing to do is to power off the laptop and then power up again.

It happens in the login page at work (it uses javascript too). The system freeze like in facebook personal status editing.

Here are some informations on my machine and system:

This may also be related to the crash in bug 472009 as a few of those bug reports mention facebook.

The only crash report I could find in those threads was bp-ff33bdc0-a5a3-452f-99be-ab9122090312.
May be cool to find out if all are the same sig. New profile is also cool. So, not sure.

Likely all using 10 r 22. I'll go through them to find out but that's by far the most common.

BtwVdpCapFilter.dll google says causes crashes in Flash and I can see a new facebook app that may be trying to use your webcam and leading to crashes. Just random speculation. (see bug 472009)

http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?locale=en-US&comments_parentId=311978&forumId=1 is the most helpful one it seems and it mentions webcams and facebook.

Today I was surfing with Opera, to avoid my system crash every 5 minutes, but when I open a site full of javascript code (ogame.it), the system crashes again.
It seems that Opera uses some firefox plugins, so I'm guessing if it's a plugin problem...

I will post a list of packages installed on my system from the firefox function: "Report a problem".

This may be a related issue, it seems to happen when an animation/block of some sort occurs on top of a flash window.

I think that this bug is not from firefox anymore...
I use a bluetooth mouse (Kensington), and the system crashes when I click a button, or simply navigate in some pages.
I have decided to try not using this mouse anymore, and using the touchpad of my laptop (HP pavilion dv3550el) or a mouse USB don't crash my system!!
So, I think that the problem is in hald or bluetooth module (BlueZ), because I have used firefox for all the day (yesterday) with no problems and no crash!!

In my /var/log/messages I have found this line before any crash:
Pid: 3024, comm: hald-addon-stor Tainted: P 2.6.28-11-generic #41-Ubuntu

Is this information useful to solve this problem?

Any chance you have a bluetooth video camera or are running on a sony notebook. Can you search for BtwVdpCapFilter.dll on your hard drive and try to locate the crash logs by following the instructions attached.

I have the same problem too. My system freezes when i browse on facebook. I looked my system monitor/info and i found that firefox has allocated 920MB RAM(!!) and the swap partition is active. I think we have a huge memory leak here.

1. Login to facebook (with firefox 3.0.9 - 3.0.10, ubuntu 9.04)
2. Open System > Administration > System Monitor from gnome panel and look the memory allocation of Firefox
3. Click on Home button (at facebook) and repeat that 10-20 times
4. Look at memory allocation of Firefox

Well, my system doesn't (always) freeze upon browsing Facebook, but it's true that memory allocation shoots through the roof, and CPU usage goes up to >90%. This happens also on Firefox 3.5.
The strange thing is that neither memory allocation nor CPU usage are lowered even after closing Facebook (that is, if I manage to close it), so the system becomes pretty much unusable until I restart Firefox.

I found this thread because I am also experiencing memory issues when visiting Facebook and some other sites (LinkedIn.com is another) with Firefox 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.04.

Facebook is overall very slow, but certain pages in particular, such as friend search and photo galleries, take up so much memory that the browser becomes slow to the point where it is unusable, and may even freeze for long periods. If I am lucky, I can close the tab and regain control. Other times I have to kill the FireFox process.

I see this on a newly-installed CentOS 5.3, with firefox 3.0.14 and flash 10.0, on an x86_64. The result is a system freeze wih blinking keyboard LEDs after a few minutes of poking around Facebook.

Curiously, the same configuration on an i386 box is perfectly happy at FB.

One other element: on the x86_64 box, I'm running 32-bit firefox, so as not to have to worry about wrapping proprietary plugins (like flash).

It happens irrespective of whether a webcam is installed.

Willing to be guided in testing.

Also, this apparently isn't a Gecko issue, as it doesn't affect Epiphany. In fact, after having visited and left Facebook on Fx, then visited it again on Epiphany, Firefox is at 75% CPU while Epiphany isonly at 12%.

I'm closing a lot of bugs which are filed as Adobe Flash bugs which are either irrelevant, not actionable, or not serious enough to track in the Mozilla bug tracker.
