Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Without warning, I've three times lost the titelbar in Firefox. I can't see the panel on top either and the window also covers my Cairo-dock. The only way to access other program is to close Firefox from the File menu. First I thought it was related to Ubuntu 8.10, for the first time it happended, all programs was affected and I could fix it by starting up in recovery mode. Then it happened again and I could fix it - though not permanently, only until logout - by reloading the window manager. Therefore I blamed the window manager, but appearantly I was wrong, because the problem remained whether I used Emerald or Metacity - and it got worse: after some time I couldn't fix it by reloading the window manager either. So I re-installed the system just to get the problem again, soon after the re-install, only this time the problem was limited to Firefox. I re-installed again and made things work for a few weeks until today. I started to prepare for re-installing Ubuntu when I got the idea to check if it had to do with just the browser... I found a backup and started to transfer the files and now it all works again.

I don't really have any good ideas, only some thoughts. Is it a coincidence I first had the problem in the entire system, then locally in the browser? Probably not. I believe there is something in the communication between the system and the program. An other thought is htat there may be some conflict between many different things in the system. I've installed a huge amount of "bells and whistles"... First of all Firefox and Thunderbird themes, then the desktop theme UbuntuStudio (which is now removed), then an other window manager than standard - Emerald - and some features from different desktop themes like Mac4Lin_1.0. Above that I have the Cairo-dock. They all come from different sources and may or may not be causing conflicts - I don't know.

I should add too that I've tried to remove the Firefox addons without solving the problem.

I actually have experienced this problem too on amd64. I have nvidia kernel modules so it doesn't seem to be isolated to your architecture or video driver. I have learned to deal with it (Pressing F11 2x to bring the titlebar back). It is an annoyance to me, but not a huge problem because everything else works correctly. I am still trying to figure out what the trigger is. If I find it, I will update the report.

OK... I have been able to find the trigger on my system. It happens when firefox tries to open a new tab as the result of an external action like clicking a link in an email (evolution) or even running:

firefox --new-tab "http://www.google.com"

So, at least that is a start.

Hello, everybody !!!
I actually managed to fix this problem by using CompizConfig and then at the Utilities Tab, I deselected Alternative .

Hope this works for all of you as well !!!
