in the browser my the single space is replaced by a tab space and the entire firefox has this problem while displaying the contents

any page i open ( for example the current page itslef) the white space ( single ) that i am using to separate the words is actually shown as a tab space . It is there for whole page and same for any page iopen

Konqueror does not have this problem. However, Konqueror is less compatible with websites so to me it's not an option...

I am having the same problem.
As I type this comment, the spacing between consecutive non-blank characters is normal but as I press the space bar, my cursor jumps 3 characters as if I had pressed the tab key instead. Also, in all text including all the text on this page there appears to be three spaces in between each word including single character words like a or 1 followed by a space.

As a result most web pages are all but impossible to read without considerable more effort.

I would go as far as to say that it has made Firefox unusable.

This bug should be considered major.

For me, the problem occurred when I installed something related to pango from synaptic. (I can't remember exactly which package it was now) I removed it and firefox when back to normal. just a thought.
