Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

try this on ubuntu 8.10:
www.dobroc.com/kuba/test.gif

firefox crashes instantly. i think the problem with this image is that it is too wide (>40000 pixels).

Confirm here also, 8.10:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3

I've tried it with other gif images, including other very wide ons 41000 pix and have not had the problem. Only your rather strange gif causes it. I downloaded it and opened with eog, it looks like it mast be specifically crafted to crash Firefox as it certainly isn't a useful image. Thats not to say it isn't important to fix..

Adding terminal error message:
" user@host:~$ firefox www.dobroc.com/kuba/test.gif
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
   (Details: serial 3287 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
   (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)"

Also, if i open the file from my downloads folder instead of the URL then instead of closing, the window stays open, cpu use goes to 100% and I get traces on the window by anything i drag over the top of it.
Hope some of that helps.

PS: I testid this from inside a VM (VirtualBox OSE) just in-case, hopefully that shouldn't change the outcome.

when opened in gimp it is a normal image - showing visitors to a page in the last 500 days.
gimp has no problems with it...

Just tried it in GIMP and indeed it works.. odd...
I've attached screen shots from ego and gimp for comparison.

Other equal sized gifs I created with created with gimp don't cause a crash.. I don't know whats going on then. :S

Happening here too.
Version: 3.0.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu2
Depends: firefox-3.0, firefox-3.0-branding

uname -a
Linux magnus-laptop 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Viewing the file in firefox locally does not crash firefox.
I got a backtrace, but somehow debugging symbols seems to be missing (they are installed).
Nothing in the logs, incl Xorg.0.log.

this is a low severity dos crash which is well known upstream. if you are interested, you can search bugzilla.mozilla.org.
