Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When using Firefox 3.0.3 rather than opening the right click menu as normal, sometimes right clicking automatically selects an option in the right click menu. It does this with the Synaptics mouse installed on my laptop, as well as mice connected through the USB port.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
NonfreeKernelModules: wl
Package: firefox-3.0 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: firefox-3.0
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-7-generic i686

I have noticed this as well. It might have something to do with JS. After modifying the JavaScript options in Firefox, it still happens on occasion, but much less frequently than before. From the Firefox menu bar, select Edit > Preferences. Click the Content tab. Next to 'Enable JavaScript', click the 'Advanced' tab. Uncheck the box next to 'Disable or replace context menus'. This should help, though as I said, I still occasionally experience this issue. Someone much more knowledgeable than I will need to look into this...

Since you mentioned JS, do you happen to have the NoScript Firefox
extension installed? I do. Is there any possibility it could be
related to that? Or have you noticed this issue without NoScript?

I do not have the NoScript extension. I don't think it would be related to that, though, since unchecking the 'Disable or replace context menus' button basically tells firefox to disable the sites JS settings on right-click. For instance, some sites write a script into the page that disallows right-clicking so you cannot save images from the site. Unchecking that button disables those scripts so that you can right-click and save images or whatever. At least that is how I understand it.

Ah, ok. I did go into the settings and disable the "Disable or Replace
Context Menus" but it has still been doing it frequently.

Weird. I would try disabling NoScript and see if that helps. Do you have JS disabled in Firefox prefs?

Also, you might try starting Firefox in safe mode and disabling all your extensions to see if one of them is causing conflicts. Just start Firefox from terminal with # /whatever/path/firefox -safe-mode, then check 'disable all extensions' and hit 'Make changes and restart'. If that works, you can restart it again in regular mode and enable each extension one at a time to see which one causes it.

And again, you may want to check your mouse sensitivity setting. In firefox, when you right-click a link and hold down the button, then select an action and release the button, it will act as though you had clicked that action. It could just be that when you right click you move the mouse a little and then release the button. The mouse sensitivity and acceleration settings might need to be lowered. You did say that multiple mouses had the same issue, so this could be the cause.

I am having the same trouble as reported above. It is pretty annoying.

If I right click very quickly then sometimes the context menu does not come up.

If I press and hold the right mouse button then sometimes the context menu appears and disappears.

At first I thought that my mouse was the problem but I have since tried different mice on both the PS/2 and USB ports and the behavior is the same.

I haven't noticed the problem afflicting apps other than firefox.

I am running the latest intrepid (apt-get dist-upgrade).
"Disable or replace context menus" is checked.

P.S.: #283644 could be related.

I'm having this issue too and it's never been a problem until I installed Ubuntu 8.10
