Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron) 32-bit, with Spanish interface.

Today, I update my Mozilla Firefox browser from 3.0.1 to 3.0.3 (3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1).

After the update, the browser indicates that the Spanish language-packs (ES-ES and ES-AR) are not compatible (see image attached).

So now, I have Firefox mainly in English, with a few phrases in Spanish.

Hola Ricardo!

Same here with italian version of Firefox!

I upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.0.3 and the former (3.0.1) Firefox (it) were recognized as "not compatible" and disabled by Firefox itself.

You can fix the interface language problem by downloading and installing the "correct" (3.0.3 compatibile) XPI language file directly from Firefox website (I did so and got again "full Italian interface" in my Firefox..the XPI files are "universal" and are suitable for any version of Firefox...Winzozz, Linux, MacOs, etc etc), but THE REAL "PROBLEM" is that the DISABLED (old) language packs (3.0.1) are always displayed in "gray" (see the attached screenshot) and you'll be UNABLE TO REMOVE THEM.

SO....HOW TO PURGE THOSE OLD LANGUAGE COMPONENTS FROM 3.0.1?

Saludos!

Same here, with Taiwan Chinese (zh-TW) locale. I believe that the method provided by H_Plow should get Firefox 3.0.3 correctly localized, but I also hope that the default language packs installed by Ubuntu could be fixed!

SOLVED !!!!

TO ALL FRIENDS "WORLDWIDE" (any language you use...)

This is the solution:

1) install the correct and updated (3.0.3) XPI language file, after downloading it from Firefox website (by doing so you'll bring you Firefox interface in your preferred language);

2) Close all Firefox windows, open a terminal and type:

gksu -u root firefox <----- this will launch Firefox in "root mode"

after typing the command above, press "enter" and you'll be prompted for the password (usually the one you use during the login..) and after Firefox will open "in root mode" (Firefox interface will appear in english, and with the default homepage...but don't care...).

Now into the Firefox window go to "Tools" ---> "Additional Coponents" ---> "Languages" and "as a charme" the UNINSTALL button for the "incompatible" (3.0.1) language(s) components will be available!!

Just uninstall ALL the obsolete language(s) component(s) you want to get rid of...after that press the button "restart Firefox" and Firefox will be rebooted always in "root mode".

Check if the obsolete language(s) component(s) no longer exist and FINALLY close Firefox and then re-launch it in "THE NORMAL WAY".....et voilà!
Your Firefox will be NOW "clean" and in your preferred language!!! :)

Glad to be usefull for the community!!!
Cheers & Peace to all :)

Ugly workaround:

Edit as root the following file:
/<email address hidden>/install.rdf (replaces es-ES to your Locale)

Change the line: <em:maxVersion>3.0</em:maxVersion> to <em:maxVersion>4.0</em:maxVersion>

That all!

Thanks, H_Plow, it works and I fixed the problem for now.

It's strange, but this bug doesn't exist in Ubuntu 8.10... Why?

Hola Ricardo

Ubuntu 8.10 should be officially released in 9 days...starting from today....

I've never tried 8.10 but I can confirm this bug afflicts 8.04.

Perhaps you verified that the bug doesn't exist in a "beta" version of 8.10?

Waiting for your reply, I send you best regards.
Giuseppe.

Hola, Giuseppe!

Yes. I tried recently 8.10 beta, and the Spanish language packs doesn't have conflicts with Firefox 3.0.3.

Cordially,

Ricardo
