Firefox does not have a problem with multiple windows in general.

Can you tell us what plugins / addons you have installed in Firefox?
Also, have you noticed if maybe Firefox crashes always when you visit a specific site?

It crashes when the third window is openned. Usually a pop-up, or a link asking for a new window.
No relation do site, or to java or to any specific condition.
I use Opera when I need to visit a place that asks for more windows openned.
I don't think the plugins make any difference, as I said, it happens sistematically when the third window is openned.

If you don't provide us with any more information, we cannot help you. I can assure you that everyone else can open as many windows as they want with firefox. So it has to do with your specific setup.

So, please provide us with more info about your firefox setup (addons, plugins, version of java, version of firefox).

System:
UBUNTU 8.04 (hardy)
Kernel linux 2.6.24-19-generic
gnome 2.22.3

Firefox 3.0.1
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; pt-BR; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008072820
Firefox/3.0.1

plugins
java(TM) 1.6.0_06-b02
adobe reader 8.0
mplayer 5.50
quicktime 6.0/7
totem
windows media player 10
mplayerplug-in 3.50
shockwave flash 9.0
real player 9

The closing is not new at all. But I am not used with relating a bug, so
I adapted to the problem. And it occurred as well with the previous
version of firefox. And it happens in both machines I use, a desk-top
and a notebook. And always the third (magical number) window. Even if a
a blank window, just cliking on the icon to call firefox, the third one
crashes. Therefore, I think it is incompatibility between firefox and
ubuntu.

Thanks
Marilia

Ok, nothing strange about the details you posted.

I can see that you have several extensions (addons) installed. Could you try removing them? Then try opening multiple Firefox windows and visit a couple of sites... See if Firefox keeps crashing on the 3rd window as you described. If it doesn't, start adding the extensions one-by-one and each time try again opening multiple windows. Tell us which addon creates the problem...

I just inactivated (not removed) them all and again. I don't need to
visit any site, it just do not open the third.

Do I need to remove them? I am afraid not be able to install afterwards.
(I am quite dumb with this thing) and I need them to do whatever I do.
Do I need to totally remove?

I'm not sure, but I think disactivating them should be enough.

Do you mean that, even with ALL of them disactivated, you still cannot open a third firefox window?

This is a big problem. It is happening to us on the Dell 1520n laptop we bought from Dell. We are running Hardy also.

I found here: http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=839902
that it might be google toolbar that causes firefox to crash.
try removing it...

I tried reinstalling Firefox from nothing and still it lags, however, if I forcefully install the Firefox 3.0 (the original Firefox bundled in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1) things go well with Firebug disabled. However, I updated Firefox to the latest available version and my problem goes back.
