Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Some days before I installed the Google Toolbar for Firefox 3.1.20080605L (which is now compatible with Firefox 3.0. Everything seem to work fine except the bookmarks feature. Normally, clicking Bookmarks on the Toolbar should show all my bookmarks (after I have signed in the Google Toolbar with my Google Account). Now, clicking Bookmarks shows "Downloading bookmarks..." for ever (until I release the Bookmarks button).

Others seem to have the same problem (see http://groups.google.com/group/FFToolbar-Group-Bugs/browse_thread/thread/ec7f94586c882c8). From the comments there it seems as if almost all users have this problem only with the Ubuntu 8.04.1 customized version of firefox-3.0. I can confirm that the problem doesn't exist on my macbook with Mac OS 10.5.3 and Firefox 3.0.

Can confirm the same problem on Ubuntu Hardy w/ALL updates using Firefox 3 that shipped with the distro. Firefox Error Console reports the following error, which I believe is associated:

Error: Cc['@google.com/toolbar/bookmark-wrapper;1'] is undefined

There was a similar problem in FF2 on previous versions of Ubuntu. Installing Libstdc++5 and disabling/re-enabling Google Toolbar fixed the problem but the same has no effect on this problem.

Google documentation for the Google Tool Bar

System Requirements: Linux Compatibility

If you'd like to run the Google Toolbar for Firefox on a Linux platform, make sure your system has glibc 2.3.5 or higher and libstdc++5. You also need to be running an x86 processor (PPC systems are not supported). We recommend using an official build of Mozilla Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org. Please note that the Toolbar is currently unavailable for Fedora Core 6.

How to determine if the problem is with glibc?
Libstdc++5 is the right version?

it would be a whole lot better to use libstdc++6 so we can work away
from ++5 since hardy and above use ++6, as for us supporting this i
would say get it into Ubuntu if you can (talk to #ubuntu-motu and
upstream devs to see if we can and see if we can get it to build and
work properly but there have been issues with the tools bar for a long
time and im not sure IMHO that Ubuntu should take supporting it.

I made only a small adjustment: I didn't install gcc-4.1 because the newer version (gcc-4.2) was already installed on my machine. This newer version seem to be also OK for the toolbar bookmark feature working correctly with Ubuntu 8.04.1 and the Firefox from the Ubuntu repository.

Doing the following solved the problem for me:

1.Uninstall the google toolbar
2. sudo apt-get install libnspr4-dev libmozjs-dev
(libstdc++5 wasn't installed and neither were libxul-dev nor gcc-4.1 . I had gcc-4.2 and it worked.)
3. Reinstall google toolbar

Marking this bug fixed/solved.

libxul-dev should do nothing to help your issue since its only used to
build packages im sure other things as well but never to run a
program/app/extension and if it is needed to run the app it is a bug in
extension. Please file the bug upstream with google to update the
depends to use the above missing packages but libstdc++6 should be used
instead of ++5 since most pakcages in Ubuntu rely on ++6 so for example
its installed as a depend of firefox/xulrunner-1.9 you can find full
depends below:
gnomefreak@Development:~$ depends firefox-3.0
firefox-3.0
  Depends: fontconfig
  Depends: psmisc
  Depends: debianutils
  Depends: xulrunner-1.9
  Depends: libatk1.0-0
  Depends: libc6
  Depends: libcairo2
  Depends: libfontconfig1
  Depends: libfreetype6
  Depends: libgcc1
  Depends: libglib2.0-0
  Depends: libgtk2.0-0
  Depends: libnspr4-0d
  Depends: libpango1.0-0
  Depends: libstdc++6
  Depends: zlib1g

Closing this bug due to this not being a firefox issue nor a Ubuntu
issue, please file bug upstream with extension packager or Google whom
ever you can get in touch with.
