i have tried to change the 'from' address in compose mail but i can't

When I close a Google Mail tab, Firefox closes immediately and unexpectedly.

I have the Gmail notifier, however I tried disabling this and restarted firefox - the problem persists.
I have tried closing the tab when the window is on gmail inbox, compose, outbox - however closing the tab on any of these still proceeds to close the window.
I have tried changing web address and closing tab - no problem.
I have investigated Gmail being open in different tabs, ie the first or last etc. - problem remains the same.

Hope this is enough information.

I am using Ubuntu Hardy Heron: 8.04
I think the Firefox version is 3.0 (not 3 beta)
