Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find out what additional work should be done on this bug.

Yes this is very much still a bug. In fact it goes much farther than just pdfs and ogg files. It won't open anything post download.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121622 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.5

I attached a pic of an example of a recently downloaded zip file, and the outcome of "Launch application".

same problem , following downloads it asks for me to chose an app and I do not see anythign in the pull down list to chose. It then goes to the file manager but I do not know how to find the app software to select it. ( in WIN I would recognize the .exe file is there something like this in Ubuntu?). Since I dwld everythign to the Desktop the work around is then to got the DEsktop and then my app opens immediately after clkg on the download. I don't know if this is a bug but it is anoying..if fixable yes please!!
Thank you all of you out there that make Ubuntu such a pleasure to use... most of the time!

I am unable to reproduce this on 3.0.7. Sounds like you are missing a pdf reader. It opens fine in my firefox. When you start download does it ask you if you would like to open it or save it?

I have experienced this problem before. Right now, on 3.0.7 I am unable to reproduce either, but it was a 'periodic' problem below this version as well.

When i started the download, the 'Open' option was checked, and the application was "(null)" this (with the brackets, without the " ).

I certainly had a pdf reader, as i could give its full path, and then FF opened it.

Problem i have is that downloading something than double clicking on it doesnt open firefox it should open whatever you use to view read it. example PDFs should not be opened by firefox unless you install the plugin. Music shouldnt open in firefox as well it should use totem or what not. If you opened from site and not downloaded it than it depends on the file type

This happens to me also. I can go a step further to say that when I right click and use "open destination" the same "launch application" dialog appears.
This bug is happening with Shiretoko, Firefox 2/3 work as expected for me.

Got this one fixed by uninstalling all firefox
# sudo apt-get remove firefox*

installing the daily firefox repos:
  -> deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
  -> deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

and reinstalling shiretoko
# sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5 firefox-2.5-gnome-support

Jaunty has Shiretoko in Universe repo and Karmic has it in Universe repo however that will be changing soon as we will provide 3.5 as default in Karmic
